Asia-Pacific Airlines Down!

Data intelligence and analytics firm Cerium released its 2021 Airline Passenger Rankings yesterday.

Peaked at 4.7 billion journeys in 2019 but declined by more than 60% in 2020.

However, 2021 volume increased by 29% to 2.35 billion. In 2019, Asia-Pacific (APAC), primarily driven by China, took over as the global aviation hub.

The story of APACs decline can be traced back to when strict lockdowns were implemented in North Asia, particularly Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan, along with China.

The most spectacular example was Cathay Pacific, which dropped from 16th in 2019 to 150th in 2021, as the city went into lockdown.
